What is the Feldenkrais Method ?

It is a form of somatic education that uses gentle movement and directed attention to improve movement and enhance human functioning. It is based on principles of physics, biomechanics, learning and human development.

Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais designed the lessons to use non-habitual movement patterns containing subtlety, variation and

mindfulness to restore vitality and function.

This organic approach to learning asks the students to listen to themselves - to move within a range of comfort, without unnecessary effort. They become more aware of their habitual neuromuscular patterns and expand options for new ways of moving.

The applications of the method range from reducing pain, improving orthopedic, neurological and learning difficulties, to enhancing performance of professional athletes, dancers, musicians, and actors. People from all walks of life are drawn to the method for its ability to achieve greater levels of comfort, increase mobility and range of motion, improve coordination and flexibility, expand self–awareness, enhance self image and evoke greater clarity and vitality.

Feldenkrais method is taught in two complimentary formats:

Awareness Through Movement® and Functional Integration®

Group classes
Awareness through movement (ATM)

Lessons are taught in both Greek and English

Awareness Through Movement lessons consist of verbally directed movement sequences: some based on developmental movements and ordinary functional activities, others on explorations of joint, muscle, and postural relationships. Students engage in precisely structured movement explorations that involve thinking, sensing, moving, and imagining.

There are hundreds of ATM lessons for all levels of movement ability. read more

People with pain, other physical conditions and elder citizens can safely do Feldenkrais lessons in which movements are performed slowly with time for rests in between, avoiding mechanical, mindless repetition. Moving within a safe range, where curiosity, learning and improvement can emerge, our brain changes as it learns.

Functional Integration (FI)

Functional Integration Lessons taught in Greek, English and French -book a one to one session

Functional Integration is a hands-on form of tactile, kinaesthetic communication. The Feldenkrais practitioner through gentle touching and movement proposes how to move in more expanded functional motor patterns. Functional Integration is usually performed with the student lying on a table or in sitting or standing positions.

In FI, the teacher develops a lesson for the student, custom-tailored to the unique configuration of that particular person, at that particular moment. Through rapport and respect for the student’s abilities, qualities and integrity, the teacher creates an environment in which the student can learn comfortably.

"The aim is a body that is organised to move with minimum effort and maximum efficiency, not through muscular strength, but increased consciousness of how it works."
