Awareness through movement (ATM)

Awareness Through Movement lessons consist of verbally directed movement sequences. Each lesson is organised around a particular function: some based on developmental movements and ordinary functional activities, others on explorations of joint, muscle and postural relationships. There there are hundreds of ATM lessons for all levels of movement ability.

In most of these structured movement lesson, students lay on the floor, while in others they are sitting or standing. Using a combination of guided attention and purposeful movement, each lesson guides you through the essential dynamic relationships in a particular pattern of movement and action. Students engage in movement explorations that involve thinking, sensing, moving and imagining.

Awareness Through Movement was developed by Dr. Feldenkrais as a means to re-engage the nervous system in the kind of learning we all do as infants. The composition of the lessons creates a conversation of sensing, feeling, resting and moving that engages your whole system in a process of organic learning whereby old habits can be replaced by new awareness and skill.

Anyone—young or old, physically challenged or physically fit—can benefit from the Method. Feldenkrais is beneficial for those experiencing chronic or acute pain of the back, neck, shoulder, hip, legs or knee, as well as for healthy individuals who wish to enhance their self-image. The Method has been very helpful in dealing with central nervous system conditions such as multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, and stroke. Musicians, actors and artists can extend their abilities and enhance creativity. Many Seniors enjoy using it to retain or regain their ability to move without strain or discomfort.

Through lessons in this method you can enjoy greater ease of movement, an increased sense of vitality and relaxation. After a session you often feel taller and lighter, breathe more freely and find that your discomforts have eased- you feel more centered and balanced.
