COLLECTIVES

A renewed interest in collectivity was prominent in Athens during the times of 'crisis' (2011-2016), a time when the Ministry of Culture stopped the funding to independent artists from the performing arts. Artists joined forces in addressing the social and the political by occupying disused theatres  like Embros theatre and other spaces. This emergence of collectives experimented with different modes and practices of collectivity and solidarity and explored forms of critical artistic, political and theoretical production as well as their relationship to the dominant social narratives.

Instigated by Mariela Nestora in 2013, CCP proposed protocols of co-creation to choreographers. This invitation to collective choreography had the aim to create opportunities for choreographers to meet, exchange and share methods as well as challenging authorship. The works advocated process over product and were created during residencies at Embros Self-managed Theatre, Duncan Dance Research Centre, Heraklion Municipal Dance Center and Kinitiras Residency, presented in Athens, Heraklion, London and Berlin.

Different protocols were applied:

For Untitled series five choreographers based in Athens Greece collaborated on a series of solo performances:

Mariela Nestora, Iris Karayan, Maria Koliopoulou, Katerina Skiada and Kostas Tsioukas co-created Untitled #1, #2, #3, #4.

For Entitled series four choreographers resident in different countries and one designer co-created a solo performance in a process also mediated by Skype. Choreographers Mariela Nestora, Fotis Nikolaou, Carolyn Deby and Patrick Faurot-Pigeon co-choreographed UMIDITA in collaboration with set/Costume design: Maria Papadopoulou

For Ad Hoc series choreographers, collectives or groups of artists based in different countries exchanged methods and co-created group performances or public space events.

Public space project UNauthorized in Athens was a collaboration between collectives CCP (GR) and Federacija Deluje (SI). Duet.

Performance “Why the Dog?” was co-created and performed by Stephanie Felber (DE) and Mariela Nestora (GR) created through residencies in Athens (Kinitiras) and Berlin performed in Athens and Berlin.
